Kenungu Falls: Hidden and Untravelled
Kenungu is the site of a small waterfall at the slopes of Aberdare Range, hidden deep within the same-name forest reserve. With two small tiers and the top, the plunge waterfall then cascades freely from a height of about 40 feet with little to no contact with the rock face. The water crashes into a small pool below strewn with rocks and boulders. Rather small compared to the waterfalls over on the side of the range, which include Karuru Falls, Kenya’s highest, Kenungu Falls is also the result of steep terrain and the resulting significant changes in elevation, creating abrupt bluffs and cliffs. Starting at Kwa Matu Stage, it is a 9 km round-trip hiking adventure to the falls rated as moderate-difficult. The last section, approaching the falls, requiring some scrambling, is often treacherous during the rain season.
