Waterfalls in Kirinyaga

Ruamutambi Falls: Calm, Unruffled Corner
At Sagana, along the A2 Nairobi-Nanyuki Road 102 km from Nairobi, there is a choice of two roads, running westerly to Muranga town and easterly to Embu town. If you follow the latter, C73 Sagana-Kutus-Embu Road, which cuts across Kirinyaga County, you will find yourself advancing towards Mount Kenya from the low lying flat region around Sagana. Suddenly you begin to climb steeply, it gets cooler and greener, and the mountain scenery at the fore is always spectacular.
8 km beyond Sagana you reach Kagio town. Just 1.5 km from here sits the rarely travelled waterfalls at Ruamuthambi. The 15 metres waterfalls, reached by a dirt road through the villages, is pleasantly surprising, set about in a calm, unruffled corner surrounded by farmlands and woodland. Ruamuthambi River, along which the Ruamuthami Falls occurs, is one of four major rivers in and around the Mwea Irrigation Scheme – alongside the Tana, Nyamindi and Thiba, and their tributaries.
On the slopes of Mount Kenya, nestled within the lush farmlands, Ruamuthambi Falls is a stunning natural attraction. The sound of rushing water combined with the tranquility of the forest makes it a perfect spot for relaxation, meditation, or photography. It cascades dramatically over a spectral rock face outgrown on its margin with river foliage, which is denser of the flanks and approach. The base of the falls provides a serene spot for picnics, and the pool for a dip. The falls can be accessed through Castle Forest Lodge, a launching base for hiking Mount Kenya.

Touring waterfalls in Kenya offers a refreshing and adventurous experience, showcasing the country’s stunning natural beauty. Each waterfall – many still little known – provides a unique and memorable experience, whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or simply the opportunity to connect with nature
