Murithi Mpuri Cultural Centre: Meru Heritage

Murithi Mpuri Cultural Centre is a private museum founded by Joshua Murithi, after resigned from his teaching job to wend on this venture. He was driven by a passion to conserve the Meru culture and celebrate its heritage. At the museum situated just 5 km from the main business of Meru, in North Imenti, one can find a great deal of Ameru traditional artefacts in the general classes of weaponry, farm implements, kitchenware, clothing, regalia and ornaments that are well restored.

In all there are over 300 artefacts. Additionally, there is a re-enacted traditional Ameru homestead depicting in fine details the traditional assembly of a typical Ameru Clan. These include the Ameru Warrior Hut adorned with the apposite regalia. Meru traditional warrior’s hut (gaaru-e-nthaka) was a roomy thatched hut with long grass from top to bottom, as it had no mud walls. During the old days it served as a big dormitory accommodating about forty to fifty warriors, and was their dwelling place till one got married and moved out to start his own home.

That Kenya has a rich cultural diversity needs no introduction. It is an invaluable blessing to the nation. To foster an understanding of this heritage, there are cultural centers around Kenya that provide insights into the tapestry of cultures and traditions in their regions. These centers preserve and celebrate traditional practices and customs amidst the shift towards modernization and globalization.

Famous for its wildlife, rich agricultural lands, and stunning natural attractions, Meru County, on the north-eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, is the immemorial enclave of the Ameru nation. Inhabited mainly by the sub-tribes of Imenti, Tigania, Igembe, and Tharaka, Meru County has one of the best developed touring circuits.
