Kimakia Falls: A Beautiful Cascade Falls

Kimakia Falls is the site of a beautiful cascade falls, a waterfall that flows over a series of rocky steps or small drops, giving the appearance of a stair-step pattern. Gently and pleasantly, it descents over two levels. As is the way with cascades, Kimakia Falls, like the mighty Karuru Falls in Aberdare National Park, is long and thin, giving both these falls a “ribbon” appearance, offering a unique visual and auditory experience. From a powerful plunges after the rains to a gentle cascade at most times of the year, the beauty of the unsung Kimakia Falls is captivating.

This trail to approach Kimakia Falls is located at Gatanga, at the southern border of Muranga with Kimabu County. The drive to the start point is wildly scenic, winding through the fine tea fields of Gatura and Kiarutara. Set in the Southern Aberdares forest, the trail commences from an old fishing camp and leads to the forest full of indigenous trees. The trail is well-covered providing much-desired deep shade from the sun. The trail then goes down to a giant mugumo tree before crossing the Chania River and then following the Ragia river to the pretty double-tier waterfall.

Best enjoyed as a group activity, the trail is relatively short but very adventurous with multiple river crossings and walking on an unbeaten trail. Sturdy shoes, a walking stick, snack and plenty of drinking water are necessary to make your hike pleasant, across the rivers and forest glades. The trail takes 4 hours if you start at the water intake point or 6-7hours of you start at the fishing camp. A pleasant forest hike with plenty of tropical trees and plants that leads to the waterfalls.
