Nyamarambe Falls: A Beautiful Unknown

Below Tabaka, in the southwestern area of Kisii County, Nyamarambe is a place of diversity and extremes. It holds traditions and culture in one hand, while striving for the modern with the other. The same is illustrated, too, in its landscape, with a diversity of eye-catching sites that include; rock formations, pretty forests, bucolic farmlands, rural homesteads and, unexpectedly, modern resorts with amenities. From Kisii town, it is 33 km to Nyamarambe via the A1 Kisii-Rongo-Isibania Road.

Nyamarambe enjoys a moderate climate with regular rainfall, making it ideal for agriculture, the mainstay occupation for all and sundry. Moreover Nyamarambe, alongside Suneka and Marani, are in the low-lying zone of Kisii County, below 1,500m above sea level, with unusually more flatter grounds compared to much of the county. Nyamarambe area is also characterized by the massive soapstone rocks which have been mined since 1885. According to Kenya’s Department of Geology, the soapstone rock is 25 kilometers long and nearly 265 meters deep.

Nyamarambe is also home home to Nyamarambe falls, the only waterfall in the region. Little-known and unexploited, Nyamarambe falls is a unique experience, in a less crowded rural settings, providing an opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy stunning natural beauty away from the typical tourist circuit. It is a well-kept secret, and hard to get to without local guidance, but holds the key element of surprise. One of the main attractions at the falls are the cave-like odd features.
