Che’s Bay Resort: A Breath of Fresh Air
For many years, the flow of traffic in Port Victoria, locally known as Port Bunyala, moved in one direction; away. Situated along the little-travelled shores of Lake Victoria, Port Victoria is a sizeable, bustling town, with a population of 12,500 as at 2020, but it serves little commercial interest other than as a fishing landing port. The tranquil lakeside gardens and immaculate lawns at Che’s Bay – so close to the water you feel as if you’re floating – give little hint of its dull, unremarkable stamp.
Che’s Bay Resort, whose buildings take inspiration from the fishing villages and boats, adopting traditional rondavels with grass-thatched roofs completed with a modern touch, reversed the trend at Port Victoria. Completed in 2016, without any of the stuffiness that can sometimes characterise older-style safari-like lodges, it feels very welcoming. There’s a relaxed feel to proceedings here! The hotel has its own boats, which can be used to explore nearby sites of interest. Travellers now come from around the country to stay at Che’s Bay and take in Isambo Beach, whose unspoiled landscape, tucked between the pleasant Singwe and Mwita Fubu Hills, is a sheltered haven with a stunning view of the lake. There are beautiful islands that dot the lake including Sigulu island on the Ugandan side and Sumba island in the Kenyan waters, making this a coveted spot for touring.
From Che’s Bay Resort, you are within 20 minutes speedboat ride to many other amazing islands, as well as to the Sango Delta, where River Nzoia empties its waters into Lake Victoria. And in two hours, you would be in Jinja, Uganda, marveling at the source of the great River Nile as it leaves East Africa snaking it’s way to Egypt. Che’s Bay is also home to the international Isambo Beach Carnival. It is situated 98 km from Kisumu, off Marenga-Bukoma Road, at Port Victoria.
