Wildlife Conservancies in Vihiga

Kaimosi Mission Wildlife Conservancy

Established in 2011, the 80 km2 Kaimosi Mission Wildlife Conservancy, managed by Kaimosi Friends Mission, was set-up to take the edge off wanton destruction of Kaimosi Forest in favour of farms. Kaimosi’s healthful altitude and population, set on border between Tiriki and Nandi, with fertile soils, is prime farmland. Kaimosi Mission, more proper Quakers or Friends Mission, synonymous with this region, having arrived here in 1902 when Kaimosi was virtually unpeopled, is continually under pressure to provide leadership about sustainability and gainful land use.

Then British District Commissioner based in Kakamega helped them identify this 1000-acres plot at Kaimosi in 1900. It’s still a key focus for Quakers today, and an idyllic base for their mission. At 5500 feet, the climate was comfortable, and the land was fertile and well forested, with ample water. As a premier, credible and mission capable force deeply set in professionalism, the Mission took up a lead role in the conservation of this fragile biosphere. Found nearby are the Kaimosi Guest House, Mago Guest House, Kakamega Reserve, and Mudete Tea Factory.

Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being. Improved security, better land management, income, employment and support to community projects have all encouraged the epic rise of conservancies unique attractions and experiences.
