Kanderi Swamp: Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park is more or less effectually drained by Athi River, crossing the northern portion of the park astride the Yatta Plateau to become Galana River further south after joining with Tsavo River. The seasonal Voi River flows through the southern portion of the park, while the other seasonal Tiva River traverses the northern reaches. Swamps in Tsavo East include Kanderi and Aruba Dam. Kanderi Swamp, an important groundwater fed system reservoir, in part watered by River Voi, is situated close to Voi Gate. Thanks to the catchment, the encircling area is marked by atypical leafy swamp vegetation. All kinds of game come to drink here, varying from the elephant and buffalo, to the lion and hundreds of birds. There are two tented camps close to Kanderi Swamp: Ndololo Camp and Sentrim Camp.

Kenya’s lakes along the Rift Valley, like Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, and Lake Elementaita, have wetland areas important for resident and migratory birds.
