Lake Olbolosat: Underrated Highland Lake

From Ol Kalou town it’s an easy 23 km drive northerly to Ol Joro Orok which lies about 5 km west of Lake Ol Bollosat. On a long day out, adventure-makers can traverse the lake, in pleasant weather, from either north to south or vice versa. Lying on Kinangop or Ol Bolossat Plain that is proximate to Wanjohi Valley, at the footslope of Ol Doinyo Lesatima and flanked by the magnificent Aberdare Range on its eastern marches, Lake Ol Bollosat is a plateau of romantic views. It is the highest of the seven lakes along the Rift Valley at over 2,350 ms (7,600 ft) and Kenya’s highest outside the montane lakes around Mount Kenya National Park.

This 43 km2 freshwater sagar on a very flat plain, flanked by a 36 km long taper escarpment, offers picturesque views and a tranquil environment, making it a great destination for nature lovers and photographers. It is watered by rivers and underground water seepage from the Aberdare Range and streams from Dundori Hills and Forest. In 2017, Lake Ol Bollosat was gazetted as a “Protected Wetland Area” in part to mitigate any destruction and to foster its birdlife. It is a designated spot for avid birders. Still untouched by mass tourism, it has remained a hidden gem where travellers can drop-in and spend a few fleeting hours unwinding, or, take it in at the snug cabin-styled Samawati Cottages set 500 ms from the lake.

Kenya is blessed with several lakes, each offering unique attractions, ecosystems, and opportunities for exploration. Shared with Uganda and Tanzania, Lake Victoria is the largest tropical lake in the world by surface area. Known for its geysers and hot springs, Lake Bogoria is among the unique lakes along Kenya’s Rift Valley. All these lakes not only provide scenic beauty but also support diverse ecosystems.

Greatly positioned as an agrarian hub, with increased investment in infrastructure, Nyandarua County is also famous for its scenic landscapes and montane climate. Named after the Aberdare Ranges, with an extensive presence, Nyandarua grew as an agribusiness locale but is well making a name for itself as an alpine escape.
