Otenyo Cultural Group Centre: A Gusii Expo
Otenyo Cultural Group Centre, in Keroka town, serves as a focal point for the preservation, promotion, and celebration of the Abagusii, more popular as Kisii, cultural heritage and identity. Created in 2004, Otenyo Cultural Group Centre exists as one of the oldest cultural centres in Kenya. Today, it is a dynamic hub of cultural activity, creativity, and community engagement, fostering connections between people, ideas, and traditions across generations and borders.
Group members specialize in cultural activities like traditional dances and songs, Abagusii language courses, performances in traditional regalia and, of course, traditional cuisine. By the same token, Otenyo Cultural Group Centre often host community events, festivals, and celebrations throughout the year, bringing people together to commemorate important cultural milestones, holidays, and traditions. These events also include food tastings, local craft fairs, focus group discussion, interactive activities for all ages, and local excursions to Manga Ridge.
While the core role of Otenyo Cultural Group Centre is to preserve and conserve Abagusii culture, they are also actively involved in conserving the environment with various local initiatives and organizations including indigenous methods, innovative approaches and dialogue. They work with other community based organizations in the area to promote tourism and conservation. The centre does not use electricity and relies purely on solar panels for energy. They use gas as a substitute for fuel, and foster forest conservation by avoiding burning charcoal.
The determination to implement certain lifestyle changes designed to help the centre thrive in a more eco-friendly way is an effort always in improvement at Otenyo Cultural Group Centre. In addition to the above, they collect rainwater, and reuse kitchen and laundry wastewater for watering the plants in their nursery. Of a recent development, the centre was able to implement an efficient waste collection policy for visitors, placing bins within the cultural centre and ensuring the outdoor areas remains always clean. The waste is then recycled in-house.
Thanks to the Otenyo Cultural Group Centre’s activities and the jobs it has created, the livelihoods of the local community and everyone involved have considerably improved, while contributing to the preservation of cultural richness of the region for generations to come. It plays a vital role in advocating for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, as well as supporting the rights and interests of cultural practitioners. Truly, well worth your visit and support!
