Annual Festivals in Tharaka Nithi

Ura Gate Festival: Meru National Park

Opened in September 2014, Ura Gate into Meru National Park gives access from Tharaka Nithi County, entering from the south. There are two main accesses into Meru National Park, at Murera and Ura. The latter follows a bitumen road from Chiakariga town. En-route Ura, motorists can make a quick detour to sight Ura Falls. In August every year Ura Gate hosts the popular 3 days Tharaka Festival in a colourful extol of cultures in Tharaka Nithi and her neighbours: Somali, Borana, Kamba, Embu, Kikuyu and Maasai. The Ura Gate Festival is not only a celebration of Meru culture but also an opportunity to preserve and promote the community’s identity in a rapidly changing world. It attracts both locals and tourists, making it a significant event for cultural tourism calendar in Kenya. The event aims to sensitize and unyoke campaigns geared towards the conservation of Meru National Park.

There are a variety of festivals throughout the year in Kenya, celebrating the diverse cultures, traditions, music, art, and wildlife. These annual festivals offer opportunities for cultural exchange, entertainment and exploration, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant and dynamic spirited cultures of Kenya.

Although Tharaka Nithi County is not a prominent touring circuit, it is a beautiful, diverse area known for its stunning landscapes, cultural heritage, and agricultural economy. Taking after the character of its closely homogenous neighbours around Mount Kenya, Tharaka Nithi, with very good roads, is easy to access and traverse.
