Weru Tea Factory: The Quirky Journey of Tea

Tea is one of the most important exports of Tharaka Nithi County. It flourishes to a large extent in the upper highland zone and much of the beauty of this area arises from the tea-landscapes. Weru Tea Factory situated 2 kms from Marima, midpoint betwixt Chuka and Chogoria, is the only tea factory in Tharaka Nithi County. With prior notice, the factory also welcomes tea-lovers to gather a few insights on the quirky journey of tea from farm to cup. A tour to the site includes demonstrations on weighing, fermenting, dying, grading and, of course, a cuppa of their finest tea.

Taking cognizance that Kenya is primarily agrarian, farm tours are a fantastic way to learn about the backbone of its economy, connect with nature, and gain insight into the operations of working farms. As diverse as they are unique, farm tours provide an experience and a deep connection to the land. It is great fun, too!

Although Tharaka Nithi County is not a prominent touring circuit, it is a beautiful, diverse area known for its stunning landscapes, cultural heritage, and agricultural economy. Taking after the character of its closely homogenous neighbours around Mount Kenya, Tharaka Nithi, with very good roads, is easy to access and traverse.
