Dam Reserves in West Pokot

Turkwel Dam: An Absorbing Mega Structure

Completed in 1991, the 1500 ms long and 160 ms wide double-curvature arch of Turkwel Dam, forged along the Turkwel River, is the largest man-made dam in Kenya with a height of about 66 meters and a grand length of 1500 meters.  What is more, Turkwel Dam is located within the Turkana Basin, a semi-arid region typified by low rainfall and seasonal rivers. The primary purpose of the whopping great Turkwel dam is to generate hydroelectric power for Kenya’s national grid.

The dam harnesses the flow of the Turkwel River to generate electricity, helping to meet the country’s growing energy demands and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Using two turbine units, it supplies 151 MW to the national grid. The dam forms a large reservoir extending upstream for several kilometers. The mind-blowing views of the Turkwel-Sekerr Gorge, Riting Hills and Nasolot Hill are exceptional along the dam’s walkway. Turkwel Dam is situated 5 km from Nasolot Reserve.

Kenya has several reservoir dams that play a consequential roles in water supply, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, flood control, and other water-related activities. The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River. While reservoir dams are critical infrastructure projects that contribute to Kenya’s economic development, they are also visually stunning go-to destinations.
