Mwea Classic Marathon: Race For Community
First run in September of 2009, and retaining the traditional starting location at Mwea Boys Secondary School, Mwea Classic Marathon has become an integral part of the community in Mwea and the entire Kirinyaga County, thanks to the big role it plays in enriching lives of the young people. It has three competitive races – full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), the short marathon (10 km), and a family fun-race (5 km). The most popular race, half-marathon, starts at the sports field outside Mwea Secondary School, straight to Mwea Hospital and to Karira Primary School before turning right and running in the rice pads past Mwea stores to the far end bridge. Thence, it turns right again back into the rice pads, running for approximately 8 kilometres on the dirt roads within the rice scheme, before re-joining the Embu Road at Thiba North where it makes a loop running on the tarmac road, through Mwea (Wanguru), to the finish at Mwea Secondary School.
