Sagana Fisheries: A Fun Research Hub

As one of the most significant centers for aquaculture research and fish farming development in Central Kenya, Sagana Fisheries, under the aegis of National Aquaculture Research Development and Training Center, focuses on research, training, and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices to ump food security and apt livelihoods – in a region not traditionally associated with consumption and commercial farming of fish. Sagana Fisheries primarily conducts research on fish species, breeding, and disease management, especially on tilapia and catfish.

On a lesser extent, Sagana Fisheries, located just off the A2 near Sagana, is among the noted breeder of ornamental fish in Kenya, making it one of best alternative touring site in Kirinyaga County. Popular for school learning trips, the variegated species, both indigenous and exotic species of fish, notably of the dazzling trout, are impressive and interesting to watch at close quarters. There are roughly one dozen ponds and its amiable tour guides have a good understanding of what is nurtured in each of its ponds. It’s found at Sagana along Nairobi-Nanyuki Road.
