The Big North: Amazing Launches Sold Short

One of the great pleasure about exploring northern Kenya is that there are plenty of much-talked about but rarely travelled destination – of mountains, landmarks, preserves, and amazing camp sites. The weather too is always on the side of the outdoor lover. After a day of scouting the plains, taking in the range views and enjoying game drives, huddling around a campfire to look up at the glowing sky, in tranquility and solitude, camping, is the best way to wind up a day here.

For the beginner, planning a trip here can feel daunting, to work out the best campsites in the big north – the collective name for the counties of Samburu, Laikipia and Marsabit – which is an extensive and diverse landscape. Lucky for the avid camper, Big North, an adventure outfit working in collaboration with key stakeholders like Northern Rangeland Trust, Nature Conservancy and Embassy of Denmark has curated some of the great camping sites in Isiolo County, Samburu County, and the Great North, and provide organizational support for campers.

The Big North is a community collective designed to market and promote visitors to this little-travlled but stunning part of the country. Some of the most popular camping launches include, but not limited to: Belinda’s Campsite in Westgate Conservancy, Tumot Campsite in Sera Conservancy, Tiamamut, Wakumbe Hill and Sunyai Campsites in Naibunga Conservancy, Lbaa and Nasha Campsites in Kalama Conservancy and Boji Dera Campsite in Nakuprat Gotu Conservancy. It features a mix of semi-arid and arid landscapes, with some areas of savannah and bushland, and home to several wildlife reserves and conservancies, including the Buffalo Springs National Reserve, Shaba National Reserve and the famed Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
