Isiolo War Memorial: For King and Country
Isiolo War Memorial is situated at the junction of Isiolo Road and the lane leading to the former District Commissioner’s Office. It commemorates 19 African soldiers who died during the 1939-45 War, whose unmarked graves in Isiolo Cemetery (an African burial ground) are intermingled with civilian graves. Three of them are not identified. Pertinently, it has of a screen wall inset with panels of Portland stone on which are engraved the names of these 16 African soldiers and 3 unknown African soldiers. The memorial dedicatory panel reads: The Soldiers who are honoured here gave their lives in the service of their county and are buried in this District.

Isiolo is almost always hot and dry at most months of year, with a mean of 30oC, and two rainy seasons. The rainfall received is historically erratic, scarce and unreliable. That is to also say, arid and semi-arid climate – of hot temperatures and low, bimodal rainfall.
