Cultural Centres in Busia

Kakapel Community Cultural Centre
The usual stop from Kakapel Rock is Kakapel Cultural Centre, in spitting distance. Visitors are treated to a showcase of artefacts and traditional memorabilia of Iteso Culture displayed at the centre. Kakapel Cultural Center was established with the aim of offering visitors a cultural passage, where they gain insights into the Iteso customs. In addition, there are ethnic dances, oral tales and traditional cuisine. This is also home to the annual Iteso Cultural Festival, held here in late-December.
Kakapel Cultural Center is a great place to turn over in one’s mind the wisdom behind the rock art and ponder on its significance. Designated as a national monument in 2004, the ethereal Kakapel Rock Art, sheltered at the base of a gigantic granite outcrop, is a rare historic destination. Created on rock surfaces by ancient and indigenous peoples, these artistic expressions provide valuable insights into the cultures, beliefs, and rituals of prehistoric and historic societies.
Kakapel Rock Art is one of the most elaborate Iron Age sequences so far found in Kenya. It is a fascinating and invaluable record of human creativity, spirituality, and cultural heritage, offering a window into the rich and diverse tapestry of human history and expression across time and space. The entire mosaic of rock art is composed of art from three discernible time-scales. The first painting is done in red, and drawn with fingers. It includes geometric designs and a red animal, probably an elephant. These paintings may date from 2,000 to 4,000 years old.
The second painting depicts domestic cattle and a small elephant. The date of these cattle paintings is unknown, but they could be more than 3,000 years old. The third painting is entirely of finger-drawn images of geometric designs and animals and its origin is the most difficult to determine. The three shelters are reached via a secure walk-ledge and curators are on-site to guide you through.
Kakapel Cultural Center sits at the slopes of the lovely Chelelemuk Hills, where very little of the range has been exploited. There is an abundance of high rocks and hillocks to explore on foot. It’s also a dreamy and brill location for camping and birding. There are dozens of rock formations, some caves to walk about. Kakapel Cultural Center is found along A104 Bungoma-Malaba Road at Amagoro, 20 km from Bungoma. The turnoff is on the right, then it is 8 km from here.

That Kenya has a rich cultural diversity needs no introduction. It is an invaluable blessing to the nation. To foster an understanding of this heritage, there are cultural centers around Kenya that provide insights into the tapestry of cultures and traditions in their regions. These centers preserve and celebrate traditional practices and customs amidst the shift towards modernization and globalization.
