Tafaria Castle & Center for the Arts
44 km from Nyahururu town via the B5 Nyahururu-Nyeri Road at Ndaragwa sits the delightfully quaint Tafaria Castle, firing the imagination of the Medieval Gothic Castles redolent of the 1400s. On arrival many are, in equal parts, surprised and fascinated by the gothic design blocks of dressed masonry, columned arches and towers which, in the 21st Century ruralest Kenya, makes Tafaria Castle a dauntless hidey hole and popular resort in Kenya. A horse and carriage is available to take guests from the main gate to the hotel’s welcome lobby, completing the fairytale.
The castle itself is an architectural marvel that blends medieval European style with African traditions. It was built by a Kenyan artist and entrepreneur, and its primary aim is to foster art, culture, and creativity. In addition to its distinctive design, the center also serves as a cultural hub, offering various artistic events, performances, and workshops. It also provides a space for artists to collaborate, perform, and showcase their work. Tafaria Castle is surrounded by vast gardens, and visitors can walk the grounds, learn about the history and culture of Kenya.
The vistas around Tafaria Castle are no less impressive, overlooking Mount Kenya, Aberdare Range and the hauntingly pretty plain of Laikipia. The novel architecture of the resort and its surrounding landscape piece together one of the unexpected but heartwarming country resorts in Kenya. As its name suggests, Tafaria Castle is pervaded with lots of activities to keep its royal guests always smiling and happy, from the lookout-decks, horse stables, horse riding, horse carriages, a swimming pool, archery, lawn tennis, medieval bowling, art studio, birding and game drives.
The art exhibition at Tafaria Castle & Center for the Arts runs throughout the year, either by its artist-in-residence after the end of each residency or by established and upcoming artists. For accommodation Tafaria Castle has deluxe 57 rooms, in the secluded residential quarters, with a capacity of up to 160 guests in different set-ups. The Castle building has the Lord’s Room, the Chamber and seven rooms in the Lord’s Court. The rest of the rooms are set around the Castle. Then, there’s the Moat Bar, Bailey Lounge, and the Dungeon with a tuneful disco and cinema.
