Natural Landmarks in Embu

Karue Hill: Embu’s Unmistakeable Landmark
One of Embu’s unmistakable natural landmarks is the conic Karue Hill, saliently towering along B6 Embu-Runyenjes Road above the adjoining sweep of small hummocky hills and forest. It presents a visual pause to the motorists along the otherwise scenic B6 Road, before the meandering eye proceeds to experience the endless green-belt landscape. This moderate conical hill, reaching 1,600 ms at the summit, particularly draws its popularity from its vantage position, the unique rock formations and the cultural significance it presents to the Aembu people.
For the motorist along the B6 Embu-Runyenjes-Meru Road, Karue Hill is also recognizable by the transmitting station at the summit and its abrupt ending in a sheer cliff. The roadside view of the hill is a striking contrast compared to a rural landscape comprising beforehand of homesteads and farmlands. Karue Hill, therefore, serves as a loved viewing point by the locals as well as travellers.
The view atop, reachable on an easy hike, is pure delight. An elevated observation deck providing visitors with expansive vistas and opportunities for sightseeing, photography, and appreciation of the scenery. The wide-view scene changes character in every direction as the rural countryside unfolds into the distant horizon. As all and one gaze approvingly, this viewpoint becomes a unifying vantage, the local and visitors to each other and to the rest of the world. At sunset it is a love-nest, where the locals come to unwind and have earshot tete-a-tetes.
The moderate incline makes it easy to ascend, taking on average 20 minutes to climb. At the hilltop, it has many mysterious and finely-chiseled rock formations jutting out, that make for interesting exploration. Curiously, at the very top of the hill, there are two tall eucalyptus trees which offer the much required shade for visitors. However, there are no amenities like benches and restrooms. The access to the hill is not well defined, lacks appropriate trails and steps up the slope.
Quarrying of rocks for construction materials by the residents and installation of telecommunication masts at the peak has also tampered with the interesting rock formations on the hill. The establishment of unique visual experiences and the cultural import on Karue Hill would be consistent with the overall aim of promoting Karue Hill. It is an invaluable cultural asset with huge cultural sway as a prayer shrine. Karue Hill is one of the visual resources whose potential has been sold short. It is found 20 km from Embu, past Mutunduri and Karingari, near Ena.
