Kaisagat Viewpoint: A Welcome to Suk
The brisk 40 km drive from Kitale to Kapenguria, the southern gateway into West Pokot County, commences with a pass at the emblematic corn fields of Trans Nzoia County, before it takes on the only steep climb enroute Makutano-Kapenguria junction. Beyond this climb, the gradient through West Pokot is a slope. Along the way you lose 4,600 ft in altitude before arriving in Lodwar.
9 km before Makutano, there’s a unique attraction nearby the Sokomoko centre. An easily accessible roadside pullout, Kaisagat Viewpoint, looking east over the Kamatira escarpment, has a pleasantly surprising and equally breathtaking view. Typically elevated, the wide view overlook across to the precipitous range in the background, with the isolated Mt. Murpus in the middle, and Muruny River over the primitive valley immediately below is a stunning. Unlucky for visitors is that it is not marked with signs or designated overlook areas to enjoy the best views.
Kaisagat serves as a great appetizer enroute the land of hidden treasures. From here, the belt of semi-arid valley stretches north-east to meet the scenically-splendid range in the background, beckoning the traveller. Kaisagat, although little-known, may be one of the first-rate viewpoints seen in the southwest region of West Pokot County. For the locals it is a spot often sought for its beauty and the opportunity to appreciate the natural environment from a unique perspective.
