Hiking Trails in Trans Nzoia

Koitoboss Peak: Kenya Third Highest Point
The dome-shaped extinct volcano of Mount Elgon is the predominant natural landmark in Western Kenya. It can be climbed in three days round-trip on foot without much trouble. There’s no mountaineering difficulty involved in the ascent of its peaks, in Kenya and Uganda, rather the climb is a mountain walk of pleasing beauty and interest with great opportunities to survey the splendorous flora of the iconic mountain. There are two main routes to hike up Mount Elgon: One in Kenya traditionally known as Kitale Route and the other in Uganda dubbed Mbale Route.
On the Kenyan side the Kitale Route, sometimes known as the Endebess Route, commences at the Chorlim Gate of Mount Elgon National Park. All hiking parties visiting here are required to drop-in at the park’s office. From Chorlim Gate the Endebess route takes to a well marked “Moorland Track”. In the dry weather, it is possible to reach the end the Moorland Track at 10,000 ft by vehicle; preferably using 4X4. From the end of the track a path ascends to Koitoboss Peak, taking about 5 hours going up, and about 3 hours down. This is the most popular route.
Chepkitale Route is a less-visited route and starts from Chepkitale in Bungoma County, on the western side of the mountain. It is a more remote and tranquil option, with more varied wildlife and birdlife. This route, taking 6 days round-trip, is less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience with breathtaking views of the mountain’s environs. Last but not least, Kapkawa route is longer and more challenging, typically taking 6 to 7 days to complete. It starts from the Kapkawa area, situated on the southern side of the mountain, and is less frequented by trekkers and hikers, offering solitude and an even deeper connection to nature.
Whichever route you prefer to hike Mount Elgon, a permit is needed, which can be arranged through Kenya Wildlife Service park office or a local tour operator. Potters and guides can also be arranged for here. There are a few accommodation options conveniently situated near the starting point to include Kapturo Cottages and Mount Elgon Lodge. A good watch for weather is important when planning a hiking adventure here. The best time to hike Mount Elgon is over the dry seasons, which are from December to February and June to September. This is when the weather is more favorable for trekking, with less rain and more stable conditions.
Much talked about for its picturesque trail, hiking Mount Elgon is a rewarding experience for trekkers seeking a less crowded but equally beautiful adventure. With its stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystem, wildlife, and the opportunity to summit a major East African peak, it’s a fantastic destination for those looking to explore the natural beauty of Kenya. While Mount Elgon is not as challenging as Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro, it still presents a moderate challenge. It’s important to be in good physical condition, as the altitude and weather can be demanding.

Hiking in Kenya offers a diverse range of landscapes and trails, from lush forests to arid deserts, and from high-altitude mountains to scenic coastal paths. The apex hiking trail in Kenya is Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak. There are eight hiking routes about it, the most popular of these being Sirimon and Chogoria.
