Wagagai Peak Hike: Mount Elgon National Park

Just over the Kenyan border in Uganda, Wagagai Peak, standing at an elevation of 4,321 meters (14,177 feet) above sea level, is the highest point of Mount Elgon. Best approached from the Uganda side of Mount Elgon National Park, Wagagai Peak is a popular destination for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts, offering breathtaking views and an unforgettable high-altitude experience at the tropics. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding plains, valleys, and volcanic features.

If the Mbale Route is used to hike Mount Elgon, on the western side in Uganda, hikers take the Soroti Road to Budadiri, the traditional launching point. Climbers wishing to use Uganda or the Mbale route should contact the Mountain Club of Uganda, for up-to-date information on the condition of the huts, porters and hut booking. The shortest but steepest route to Wagagai Peak, taking about 4 days, is Sasa Trail. A scenic but longer route, taking about 5 to 7 days, starting near the world-famous Sipi Falls, is the same-name Sipi Trail. A gradual route that is less strenuous, ideal for those wanting to enjoy the journey and wildlife, is Piswa Trail.

From Bumagabula, a path leads in 5-6 hours to the Uganda Mountain Club Hut, Sasa Hut. From here it is a further 5-6 hours to Wagagai. The alternative route up Mount Elgon on the Uganda side is through Bukalisi, 34 km south of Budadiri. From here it is a poor steep road via the Sasa Trail to Bumasola, 6 km away over a rough underfoot. It is possible to drive up to the southern edge of Bumasola and launch from there. From here the trail goes past the famous ‘Wall of Death’ and ‘Mudange Cliff’ to Sasa River Camp, 5-6 hours away. The next morning the path is followed up the valley to the Mude Cave Camp passing the Jackson Springs and Jackson’s Summit and into a small valley with tarns and amazing pine flora, on to Wagagai.

Thanks is location astride the Equator, hiking Mount is almost always pleasant – excepting the rainy season. You pass through dramatic landscapes carved by volcanic activity and erosion. Near Wagagai Peak lies Jackson’s Pool, a serene high-altitude lake situated in the volcanic caldera, surrounded by rugged terrain. The Wagagai area is home to unique flora and fauna adapted to the high-altitude environment, making it a bucket-list destination for trekkers and photographers. The mountain and its peaks hold cultural importance for the local communities, including Sabiny and the Bukusu, who have lived near Mount Elgon for centuries.

You will need to choose which trail to use to ascend Wagagai Peak from the Uganda side. Sasa (cross on the third day) and Sipi (cross on the fourth day) are the two most popular. Sipi has you camp in a giant cave of bats; Sasa has a cool section of staircases up a steep scree, often referred to as “ladders”, but they are definitely stairs.
