Forest Reserves in Migori

Nyaandui Forest: a Roadside Beauty
Of the 2596 km2 land surface area of Migori County, only 11 km2 in under gazetted forest reserves, while 45 km2 is under non-gazetted forest. So that the total forest cover for Migori County is 0.03 percent. And tree cover is 10 percent. This is, no doubt, lower than the average national forest cover that stands at 9 percent. But all is not forlorn, because the County Government working with several local community groups has been keenly embarking on conserving the environment and natural resources in order to mitigate and adapt to impeding climate change.
Among these efforts include the establishment of forest plantation at Ottacho and Nyaandui forests. For many years, the modest Nyaandui Forest has been a pretty roadside attraction for the C13 Migori-Kehancha-Nyamiencho bound motorist. The forest lies 46 km southeast of Migori town. Rather pleasantly, Nyaandui Forest enhances the visual landscape, making the C13 Road more scenic for drivers and pedestrians. Its adds a unique natural beauty in a county that is dominated by flat open land covered by large monotonous sugarcane, tobacco and coffee farms.

Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.
