The Trans Mara Conservation Area: Keturo Hill

The southeastern corner of Migori County borders a long stretch of Narok County along the peripheral area of the Masai Mara Ecosystem. Trans Mara, a term commonly referring to “beyond the Mara”, is widely used to refer to the peripheral area northwest of Masai Mara National Reserve along the outer side of the Siria Escarpment. In this better-known area of Tran Mara, beyond the Siria Escarpment, the land rises to over 6,500 ft, covered by a mosaic of semi-deciduous and dry-deciduous forest and acacia savanna woodlands. Outwith, Nyakweri Forest, covering 500 km2

, remains under the group ranches including Kimintet and Oloirien, directly border Mara Triangle, is designated as protected wildlife areas. The lesser-known region beyond the Mara contigious with Migori County is epitomized by the dome of Keturo Hill. Away from the healthful plains in Migori, over the hill, the savanna plain of the Mara begin their utter dominination. At the hilltop, these two divergent ecological zones are unambiguous and well defined.

Migori is a diverse and culturally rich county with vast agricultural potential, significant mineral resources, and proximity to important cross-border trade routes.
