Got Kwer Shrine: The Calvary of Migori

Kenya has a swag of fascinating indigenous initiated churches or neo-religious movements none, perhaps, as intriguing as the Lego Maria and all its constituent factions. Legio Maria has 60 dioceses and 450 churches in Kenya. Got Kwer, locally dubbed “Calvary”, is a religious shrine and cemetery for Lego Maria Sect, where their influential leader and eternal spiritual mediator Baba Simeo Lodvikus Simeo Melkio Ondeto was buried in 1988. Lego Maria of African Church was initiated by repeated appearances of a mystic woman to several Roman Catholic members delivering gist about the incarnation of the son of God as a black man.

Ondeto’s death was not suppose to happen. He was immortal. His death, as the followers tell, was a big blow, since he was, as they believe, the reincarnated son of God. Ondeto was a ‘galagala’, Luo for mysterious person. Tales of how he once mesmerized policemen who had been sent to scatter his crowd by becoming “bullet proof” still dominate narratives about him, long after he died; a death that shattered the long-held belief that he was immortal. Nearly forty years after his death, his followers, growing in numbers, still believe Ondeto will be back. Until then, they all take worship at Got Kwer, the famous hill where Ondeto was buried.

The Got Kwer Shrine has four main areas: At the very top of the hill lies the main church where services are held; Near the church is the initial grass-thatched building raised in 1963; On the eastern side of the hill is the St. Catherine area, a residential area where the elderly and vulnerable dwell; and finally, to the west, is where the young families live. In 2020, Police indefinitely closed Got Kwer shrine following a deadly clash between two factions of the Legio Maria that left four people dead. Chaos marred the last day of the annual memorial ceremony of the founder Ondeto after the factions claiming leadership of the church locked horns.

The leadership row in the Legio Maria sect has lasted for over a decade, resulting in division of the church and constant fall outs. Legio Maria was legally registered in Kenya in 1966 as a religious movement and then expanded rapidly in the late 1960’s to 1980’s, especially in Luo Nyanza. The annual pilgrimage to Got Kwer Shrine by its followers from far and wide, held in the first week of September, attracts about 10,000 members. A visit to this site offers travellers insights into one of the recherché misunderstood religious movements in Kenya. Got Kwer Shrine in located in Suna West region, about 30 km west of main Migori town.
