Rongo Town: Northeast Gateway to Migori

North to south the towns of Rongo, Ranen, Awendo, Migori, Suba Kuria, and Isibania are sited along the main A1 Road, the latter being the border-point with Tanzania. The smaller centers of Odok, Thimjope, Kehancha, Ntimaru and Kegonga are all sited east of the main A1 Road along the boundary with Kisii and Narok counties. With several busy roads radiating out of Rongo town in the northeast corner of Migori County, it has always been more transitory than commercial.

Rongo towns lies 30 km north of Migori town, the capital town, and 60 km from Kisii town. Rather unimpressive and altogether underwhelming, Rongo’s present-day function as the administrative headquarters of Rongo Sub-County has helped it grow significantly over the years, thanks in part to its strategic location. One of the great institutions that has come with this new wave of development is Rongo University, a public university that’s the heart of higher education in the region.

As Rongo town continues to grow, it will play an increasing role in connecting farmers to markets, providing essential services to the surrounding community and offering a jumping-off place to the ever-growing number of people visiting this region. The sufficiently modern Treat House Hotel just outside the main business district is a great indication of the unrealized potential of Rongo town.

Migori is a diverse and culturally rich county with vast agricultural potential, significant mineral resources, and proximity to important cross-border trade routes. While it faces challenges, Migori County offers great opportunities for touring, especially with attractions like Thimlich Ohinga and Lake Victoria.
