Lamu Donkey Sanctuary: Haunting Portent
With no wheeled transport on the island, and narrow alleyways, Lamu has kept the tradition of donkeys as the primary mode of transport. The town is thronged by dozens of donkeys and their porters, especially near the jetty, which for first-time visitors to Lamu is a haunting portent of the island’s old norms. Begun in 1987, this free of cost sanctuary offers the provision of what’s necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection, with great care, to the 3,000 donkeys on the island. Modernization can look disruptive to this passé mode, as historians would explain, and there seems to be much going againist the donkey trade, yet the observance of this antwacky life on the island is still surprisingly full of life.
