Udo Bandas and Campsite: Kakamega Forest
Situated at the heart of the Kakamega Forest, surrounded by towering indigenous trees, vibrant birdlife, and a rich diversity of plants and animals, Udo Bandas and Campsite are simple, self-catering cottages providing budget-friendly alternative accommodations for visitors exploring this unique tropical rainforest. Managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), these rustic bandas offer an authentic forest experience amidst the serene and biodiverse environment of Kakamega Forest.
At hand, the campsite is about 5 minutes drive from the main gate. It is lush, well maintained and buget-friendly. There are tents for hire, but guests can bring their own kit. It is a lovely camping experience surrounded by nature, with fire places, and washrooms available for use by campers. Showers have warm water! From both Udo Bandas and Campsite guests can take unlimited nature walks to explore the forest’s numerous trails, including Isiukhu Falls and Colobus Trail. The forest is home to over 300 bird species, including the Great Blue Turaco and Ross’s Turaco.
Animals you might encounter include monkeys (blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus), duikers, and forest squirrels. The forest is also known for its rare plant species. Over guided forest tours, you get to learn about the unique ecosystem and cultural significance of the forest. All in all, Udo Bandas and Campsite, while basic but functional, are wholesome, very family and group friendly, catering to travelers looking for an affordable and immersive experience. Udo Bandas can be accessed via road 15 km from Kakamega town, and about 50 km from Kisumu.

The altitudes of Kakamega varies between 1,240 ms to 2,000 ms. The southern part of the county is rather hilly, and strewn with unique and rugged granite tors, rising in places to nearly 1,950 ms.
Temperatures range from 18oC and 29oC. January to March are the hottest while June to August are cold spells. The climate is equable over the county, with adequate and well distributed rainfall.
