Masinde Muliro University Botanical Garden
The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) intends to develop a botanical garden that will exposition an extensive plant diversity. In a like manner to university botanical gardens around the world, this specialized garden, managed by the university, will serve as a center for education, research, conservation, public engagement, and tourism. The garden will provide students, researchers, and the public with access to a diversified collection of plants while promoting biodiversity and sustainability. Open to the public, it will also enhance the alternative touring destinations in Kakamega County while promoting learning and behaviour change practices that mitigate the impeding climate crises bomb.
The proposed site for MMUST Botanical Garden has been identified and hived off. The garden is bordered by students hostel, a sewerage system and science block. Within the garden passes several paths used by the students. The garden is part of the university area with trees, compared to other areas within campus where trees have been cleared to pave way for infrastructural development. The tree biomass determination tended towards a forest centric approach, ignoring trees outside forests. The feasibility study sought to determine tree diversity and tree biomass within its university precinct, with 8 quadrats measuring approximately 100m2 being randomly laid in the proposed site for the MMUST Botanical Garden.
