Ilesi Pottery Centre: A Legacy of Pottery
The Isukha and Idakho sub-tribes of the Luhya community, who are fairly gifted potters, have preserved their age-old pursuit into a thriving industry, producing an assembly of beautifully crafted earthenware. The community-run Ilesi Pottery Centre, which is a localized initiative to create a sustainable income generating industry, makes use of the existing communal strengths. Aside from the practical uses of the earthenware made at Ilesi Centre, some items double as rustic decor pieces. Callers to the site also get to see the always cheerful craftsmen produce these wares. From here, a few metres ahead, across the road, is Ikhongo Murwi, the Crying Stone of Ilesi. Ilesi Pottery is found off A1 Kakamega to Kisumu Road.
