Natural Landmarks in Elgeyo Marakwet

Melwa Gorge: A Sightly Basalt Sprout
Carved by ancient forces and much appreciated by modern cameras, Melwa Gorge, a very attractive and deep cleft cut through a basalt sprout by the Kerio River, rivals the popular Chebloch Gorge, albeit being little-known. Obviously, the mother of all gorges in Elgeyo Marakwet, Chebloch Gorge impossible to overlook. But for the intrepid looking for extra bragging rights, Melwa Gorge, cut through basalt rock, over millions of years by the Kerio river, is a must-visit destination. Its magnificent scale and immense natural beauty are simply breathtaking to boot.
It is one of three such gorges along a 60 km stretch of this river. River excavations are in progress almost continuously, and it’s possible to make a guess at the lapse of time taken to evolve the gorge standing where the jagged rocks have been so impressively chiseled into a wondrous formation. Although the step out to Melwa Gorge is quite demanding, and oftentimes treacherous, it is a wholesome walk.
Melwa Gorge is found in an undebased and enthralling backcountry contained within a plethora of memorable views, 22 km north of Chebloch Gorge via Sego and Muskit centres and then along the Wilson Kispang Road for about 4 km.
