Malabar Hill: The Lion of Bute
At Bute, 48 km from Wajir along the 256 km northwesterly trending C80 road linking Wajir to Moyale, is a spectacular landform, breaking the monotony of the plains. I km from Bute rises the Malabar Hill, more popular as Lion Hill. This hill, reached on a walking trip from Bute, is sacred among communities living around it, and it has shaped their beliefs. In some cases been a possible aid to shape conduct. Even from a distance, the legend of Lion Hill is certainly appropriate.
Malabar Hill certainly resembles “the fabled lion with a wide open mouth”. This has buff cultural significance for the native communities of Bute. As the tribal legend tells, mothers of school going children years-on have spurred good conduct in their kids with the threat of throwing them into the gaping mouth of Lion Hill. Call it myth, but the children at a modest school on the foot slopes of Malabar Hill are eternally convinced of its old-wives legend. Plans are underway to establish Malabar Hill as a national reserve and to erect an enclosure fence.
