Samia Hills: A Natural and Cultural Heritage
The southern part of Busia County is covered by a picturesque range of scenic hills distinguished by Samia and Funyula Hills. These range of hills run from the north-east to the south-west, terminating at Port Victoria. In days gone by, Samia Hills were traditionally used as a place of worship but, despite the long-standing symbiosis, they are threatened by wanton deforestation, stark in the past decade.
Samia Hills, those between Ports Sio and Bunyala, are the most pronounced of Busia’s vast volcanic igneous rocks that underlay much of the county. These hills and their associated colluvial basin stand out quite prominently to the east and southwest areas of Funyula and Bunyala. They are marked by deep valleys cut by major rivers, Nzoia, Yala and Sio, along their dendritic drainage to Lake Victoria.
For tourism, the Samia Hills are designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The Muungano Development Environmental Conservation Forum have put in place noble initiatives to conserve and protect this landscape by re-planting indigenous trees towards this course. While a pleasurable roadside attraction, Samia Hills are especially scenic when observed at close quarters, rising as a striking hillscape.
For the avid hiker, Samia Hills are rated easy-moderate. The drawback is that they are rather difficult to access owing to coarse screes covered by tall grasses, and in places by irky thick thorn bush. All the same, the best times to hike is in the early months of the year when the vegetation is dry. At which season, too, the locals are burning the field. Burning helps them prepare fields for the next growing season.
