Mwibale wa Mwanja: A Towering Monolith
Quite unmistakable along C41 Kakamega-Bungoma is the massive free-standing monolith piece of granite dome, more proper Mwibale wa Mwanja. This large, upright, and often imposing structure has a circumference of 3 km2, making it a popular landmark. It is also a popular destinations for hikers and nature lovers, thanks, in many respects, to its impressive size and picturesque surroundings.
At most times of the year the outrock is engulfed by high-yielding vegetation and a fascinating variation of rock adapted plants. Past these, there are several step-like footways that take to the top of the Mwibale. Within this glorious setting is a wide view. It is easy to survey the ongoing transformations, developments, and shifts occurring in the countryside. The shift in crop choices is also interesting.
Mwibale Wa Mwanja is the source of 18 tiny streams that all merge lower down at Mwikhupo Falls on River Nzoia. These streams also feed its rock pool. The small, naturally formed pool at Mwibale Wa Mwanja is a delight. An offbeat swimming pool! Although it varies seasonally in size and depth, it contributes to the beauty of the site. The intricate patterns, colors, and movements are visually appealing.
Granite monoliths are formed through geological processes involving the cooling and solidification of molten magma. Over time, the surrounding rock may erode, exposing the granite monolith. Granite monoliths often provide valuable insights into the geological history of an area. From Bungoma town you travel south along the C41 Bungoma-Kakamega Road for 14 km to Mwibale Wa Mwanja, and contrariwise from Kakamega for 35 km. Not to missed along this route is a visit to the Sangalo Rocks. There are no charges to access and explore both these sites. A word of caution is necessary here: rock surfaces can get slippery, due to water, algae, or other factors that reduce friction.
