Tana Delta Colonial Forts: The Old Main Jail
At present the site of the Kenya Wildlife Service Minjila Substation, Minjila Fort, a corruption of the term “main jail” was a prison during the colonial administration. On the other hand, Garsen was a military garrison, which the locals baptised Garsen. One of the Garsen forts is located at Garsen Primary School junction and another sits near the ferry. The forts are connected by underground tunnels. It’s said, though not verified, that King George of Britain hid here during World War I.
