Orahey Bunkers: Relics Of WWII Battles

To some the term Orahey means hot open fields, in reference to the open fields near old town Wajir. Despite an apparent inhospitable outlook, the Orahey fields are an epicenter of activities as they were during colonial years and earlier. These windswept fields, where the communal Orahey wells abound, are also strewn with a sequence of Italian built bunkers [measuring about 4.15 metres long, 3.80 metres wide and 1.45 metres high] as well as other derelict defensive structures.

Concealed and finished with the local yellowish sand to make them blend in with their surroundings, these intricate systems of trenches, gun turrets (or wingers) and bunkers were used by the Italians and British during World War II campaigns in East Africa. Other sites of interest near the Orahey bunkers, among the oldest buildings in Wajir, include: Wajir Museum, the old houses built by Italians, an old court house and Mosque. All which help connect travellers to Wajir’s long history.
