Sanaa Gallery: Allidina Visram (1851-1916)
Not far from the Africa Hotel sits the Sanaa Gallery, the dominant building on the south-western side of the Old Government Square and the Old Port. Today it houses a vintage furniture and antique shop, but it is rather more impressive for its historical import as the base of operation for one of, if not, the most successful businessman Mombasa has yet been blessed with. From 1899 this house was the central office of the Ismaili merchant and philanthropist Allidina Visram (1851-1916) who, as his memorial sited at Treasury Square indicates, was a leading Indian merchant and one of the pioneers who helped to open up mainland Kenya to trade and civilization. Allidina Visram arrived in Mombasa in 1898 and worked his way up to become a key, prosperous and respected businessman of his period.
Aptly nicknamed “the uncrowned king of trade in East Africa” Allidina was born in Bombay, India, where he spend most of his childhood years, before his family moved to Zanzibar when he was 12 year old to escape poverty and find livelihood. It is while living in Zanzibar that he honed his knack for organizing trade caravans. On arrival at Mombasa, he started out as a shop’s assistant. The rest is history! At his prime, Allidina became the sole supplier of food to the Indian workers along the East Africa Railway Line as one of more than two dozen big enterprises he ran across Africa that included shipping, factories, plantations and real estate. Despite his untold wealth, he was a gregarious and neighbourly man, devoting his time and money to generally improve the welfare and development of communities.
