Ras Serani Lighthouse: Southern Beacon
Mombasa’s 42 km long coastline of idyllic and scenic beaches is chaperoned by an obelisk farrago of lighthouses, active and inactive, standing bold against the elements, which stout with intent have guided sailors ashore over many decades. The local word commonly used for a lighthouse is ‘mnarani’ or ‘mnara’, related to the Arabic ‘manara’. The Arabic word ‘ra’ or ‘ras’ is used for a creek. Local interest was evinced in the Ras Serani high light, the only major lighthouse on the British East African coast, which cast its 21-mile beam across the Indian Ocean. At the top of its 108 feet high tower a one-second flash every five seconds provides the latest navigational aid to ships, helping them to keep on course in the variable currents of the waters off Mombasa. The tower is of precast concrete blocks.
Other key lighthouses include: Serani Range Rear Light, the Cannon Point (a lighthouse that replaced a square pyramidal tower painted with black and white horizontal bands rising from a promontory on the south side of the entrance to Mtwapa Creek estuary 15 km northeast of Ras Serani), the Mombasa-Mtongwe Rear Range Light, the Likoni Light, Ras Kisauni (that guides vessels into the old port on the east side of the island, located on the mainland off Nyali Road east of the New Nyali Bridge) Ras Mitani (located on the west side of the Old Port entrance opposite Ras Kisauni and just off the Mombasa Hospital, only accessible by boat), Port Reitz Rear Light, the Makupa Causeway Light, Shanzu and Old Town’s Lights.
