Mumoni Hill Forest Reserve: Wooded Inselberg
Mumoni Hill lies in the northwest corner of Kitui County, eached 64 km north of Mwingi town via C93 Mwingi-Kathwana Road. Quite unmistakable, it juts out as a wooded inselberg, rising 1811 ms (6000 ft) and 700 ms above the surrounding arid scrubland plains. Mumoni Hill is separated from Kiang’ombe Forest Reserve (in Embu County) by a broad valley cut through by Tana River, that in the south west area is dammed to carve out Kiambere Dam completed in 1987 along the border between Embu and Kitui counties as part of the Seven Forks Dam Project.
Although Mumoni Hill sits in Kitui County, it is a prominent landmark in the lower areas of Embu. It is known for its unique landscape, ecological significance, and cultural heritage. Famous for its prominent rocky outcrop, rising abruptly from the surrounding plains, Mumoni Hill is typified by rugged terrain, with cliffs and rocky slopes dominating its landscape. The hill stands out prominently in the relatively flat, dormant surroundings, offering panoramic views of the surrounding areas.
Mumoni Hill makes up the larger part of the 104 km2 Mumoni Forest Reserve along with Muvoria Hill Forest Reserve lying in its immediate south. Both these hillscapes were gazetted in 1993 as a forest reserve owing to their importance as a water tower for Mwingi North region. For tourism, Mumoni Hill Forest Reserve is a walkers and birdwatchers escape, where varied birds like raptors, hindes babbler, palied harrier, Somali biome and martial eagles have been regularly spotted.
Although still underdeveloped, Mumoni Hill is crisscrossed by a vast network of pathways over which motorists can appreciate its landscape, landforms, assorted flora and avifaunal diversity, as well as its fetching viewpoint. 375 plant species were identified in 2006. It also holds historic and cultural significance for the local communities, including the Kamba people who inhabit the region. It is considered a sacred site and is linked with traditional beliefs, rituals, and cultural practices.
Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.
