Wewo Catholic Church: Soaring in The Clouds

The northwest area of Embobut is howling and varied, its terrain ranging from wooded hillocks, the dramatic escarpment and the ever-green montane forests. Rather reminiscent of Tambach town, on a miniature scale, Embobut centre is an enchanting little settlement build right at the edge of the escarpment. One of the best-kept-secret hidey-holes to visit at Embobut is the Wewo Catholic Church

Its apt sobriquet as the Church in the Clouds answers to its inimitable location at the extreme northern edge of the Elgeyo Escarpment, overlooking the Kerio Valley in almost all directions. It is a transfixing ledge with awe-inspiring views. The Church itself is marked by bright monumental sharp angular walls, giving it a timeless appearance. Outwith the view at Wewo Catholic Church includes the rippling Cherangani Hills, Elgeyo Escarpment, Kerio Valley, and Embobut Forest.

Wewo Catholic Church shares this auspicious alias with the famous All Saints’ Cathedral in Nairobi, which is often colloquially referred to as the “Church in the Sky.” It’s a striking architectural landmark situated atop a hill overlooking the city of Nairobi. Its unique location and design give it a commanding presence, and its tower, which rises high above the city, is visible from many parts of Nairobi.

The view on a charming small mountain chapel at Wewo, built on the edge of the escarpment, gives a sense of soaring with eagles, overlooking landscape stretches so far out in all directions that it brings you to a happy, revential brink of fear and awestruck. You’ll hear nothing but birdsong and treetops rustling in the breeze. Wewo Catholic Church is found 90 km north of Iten. The easiest route is via Iten-Kapsowar Road through Singore, Chebara, Kabetwa, Chesoi, and Chepkoit towns.

You don’t have to be religious, or even spiritual, to enjoy a beautiful old church. The architecture, the stained glass, the history, and the famous graves all make visiting historic churches a fulfilling activity on any trip. Kenya has a lot of very old and lovely churches, and you can enter most of them free of charge, at any time.
