Little Theatre Club: Nurturing Performing Arts
It is rather expected on the visitors to Kenya’s coast to enjoy live performances of one kind or another in the evening, staged at no extra cost in most resorts. But for most visitors who have experienced the shows at this theatre are kind of at a loss for words, really. It is an unsung jewel of Mombasa Island that stages captivating performances from African, Indian and European imports in line with Mombasa’s multi-cultural fabric. When you turn up for a performance here one hardly knows who is going to be on it, local artists or international guests, but the shows always impress, with at least 10 productions each year. Its foundation is based on cultural promotion, with an emphasis on performing arts. Moreover, the 200-seater club with a fully functional stage complete with an orchestra pit got a total makeover in 2017 thanks to a Kes 50 Million stimulus package from the Government of Kenya.
Little Theatre Club was originated from a proposal to the Garrison Theatre by a former soldier, Richard Moreton, in 1947. It moved to its current location in 1952, a plot owned by the East African Railways and Harbours. Initially utilized by the British Royal Navy (for the East Indies Fleet Canteen Committee) as a club, during World War II, it changed hands in 1946 when the navy left the premises to Pandya Memorial Society, who set up a clinic there until December 1951, paving way for Little Theatre Club to move in 1952. The club constitution was drafted in 1988. It is situated along Mbaraki Road, about 700 ms from Mbaraki Pillar and 500 ms from the entrance to Mombasa Railway Sports Club.
