Shaka Ruins: Old Arab Town
The Shaka ruins are located on the edge of Kipini beach, 4.5 km from Ungwana bay. Shaka ruins consist of a mosque and several houses represented by mounds of rubble, tombs and wells surrounded by a wall. The site is smaller, relative to the larger Ungwana and Mwana ruins, occupying about 10 to 12 acres. There is only one mosque that may have been a double mosque at the Shaka ruins. The most important architectural structures of Shaka are its tombs. On the rising ground north of the site, within the town wall, are five tombs referenced A, B, C, D, and E.
There are dozens of well-studied and accessible historic sites along the Kenya’s Coast. Some of the historic sites located here are composed of the old settlement towns and outlying groups of tombs. North to South, the coast is awash with a collection of ruins, found mainly along the beach, many of them on private lands.
