The modest cottage is enclosed in a sea of greenery, wild and natural flowers, and the healthful alpine air. There is a cracked expanse in the forest grove that opens up to splendid views of Mount Kenya. And one could not pick out a better place to have an afternoon tea or read a book, watching the snowy peaks glisten under the clear blue sky, fading in out with the predictably foggy evenings.
The cottage itself with 8 rooms is spacious and comfortable, styled with simple decor, blending harmoniously with the surroundings and reminiscent of the farmhouse days. It oozes the rustic ideals of an off-the-grid hideout. Onsite, there is a restaurant, a garden, barbecue grills and picnic garden. After a day of settling into the cozy interior, it’s time to brave the outdoors. To start, there is a small farm at hand to walk about. With the Rupingazi River flowing a walking distance away, the fisherman can disembark, through the shady grove, to enjoy a day of fishing.
For the nature-lover and walker, the Rupingazi River offers a diverting natural yardstick to explore the hushed bucolic countryside. There’s a not-too-shabby a waterfalls along the river. With the cold air bracing in the evening, the warm cabin is a restful place to enjoy a weekend away. Guests are booked on a self-catering basis, with a helper at hand to assist guests. An alternative route to Mount Kenya Riverside Retreat from Embu is through Mutunduri, 16 km from Embu town along the B6, then 6 km north along the D467 Mutunduri-Kiajakoma Road to Manyatta.
