Camp Ndunda Falls: An Adventure Outfit
Arriving at Embu town there is a choice of two roads, one running southerly to Kiritiri and Kitui and another running northerly to Meru. If you take the latter, to Meru, the road continues up a slight gradient through Mutunduri and Runyenjes as you near the border of Mount Kenya National Reserve. 2 km after the turnoff, then taking a left turn near Embu Level 5 Hospital, you are on track to Njukiri Forest.
Located at the northeast corner of the forest is Camp Ndunda Falls, one of the great adventure outfits in Embu County. One and all, it draws in campers, nature-lovers, birdies and hikers from far and wide. Some of its prime highlights include the rope-bridge looking over Ndunda Falls, zip-line across the River Rupingazi, walking the Njukiri Forest trail and biking around camp. It has a basic, well-kept and pocket-friendly camp liked for its hanging or rocking beds, and a campsite.
The area is also wildly beautiful and unspoiled, set at the foot slopes of Mount Kenya and along the banks of the River Rupingazi. Across the trails is a constantly changing scenery met with a friendly fork and plenty of monkeys going about their risible rituals. Whilst the monkeys are not inherently funny – atleast not done by intention or social design – the glee about them, reminding us a bit of ourselves monkeying around, cannot be denied. Further up the trail within the forest is a chain securely tied on a branch several meters high with the river flowing below, aptly dubbed the wild swing. Playfully mischievous, swinging and swaying in wild tempo, the wild swing is a thrilling adventure going back to childhood memories.
Once the ride begins, thankfully with a comfortable seat and secure roping, it is easy to appreciate the skill of monkeys swinging from tree to tree. The experience is exhilarating! After a day out in nature, the evenings are quiet and life-giving. For the travellers who prefer sleeping indoors, Camp Ndunda also offers comfortable modern rondavels, teepees and cabins. There’s a campsite, too. From the turnoff, it is a 6 km hop to Camp Ndunda Falls, passing ASK Ground and Njukiri Centre.
Camping is much more than a pleasant holiday, it’s a great way to truly enjoy Kenya. An inexpensive and indulging do-it-yourself holiday. In the warm Kenyan sun, camping is a way of life the intrepid spiritedly remembers. It is a memorable outdoor activity to carry out whether you are single, as a couple, or as a family.
