Seven Forks Hydroelectric Power Project
The Seven Forks is a section of the Tana River where it splits into seven streams before reforming into a single river, leading to the Kindaruma dam. This river division is a natural feature and the reason why the entire hydroelectric project is called the Seven Forks System. The hydro-electric Power Project, forged along River Tana between 1981 and 1999, contributes 65% of Kenya’s hydro-electricity. Although not a popular circuit, the Seven Forks can be toured consecutively. One unique route to scout the Seven Forks Project begins at Kiambere Dam and goes past Kindaruma and Gitaru, in Embu County, before dropping in at the sightly and amusing Kamburu Dam, straddling the boundary betwixt Embu and Machakos County. The final stretch aims for the roomy Masinga Dam set along Machakos and Embu border. All five power station dams are linked by good road network.

The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River. Part of the larger Ukambani alongside Kitui and Makueni, Machakos County is a nexus between Maasailand, the coast region, the central highlands, and Nairobi. The northern area of Machakos, being a dormitory zone for the capital of Nairobi and a peri-urban buffer for Kiambu, is developed with useful amenities. Southerly heading the ecology is continually semi-arid and the countryside more desolate.
