Lambwe Valley: A Dramatic Untold View
Both adjuncts of the C19 Road – Homa Bay-Mbita Road and Kodiero-Nyandiwa Road – have great vantage views of the low-lying Lambwe Valley, where the Ruma National Park lies. One of the convenient roadside view of Lambwe Valley is at the small centre Ogongo, 22 km from Homa Bay town enroute Mbita. It’s a rarely busy good road, and you just pull up to the shoulder of the road and enjoy the splendid sight. Always make sure you are safely parked away from the road.
The expansive Lambwe Valley is a south-westerly extension of the Kavirondo fault trough lying between the Kanyanwa Escarpment to the east and the Gwassi Hills to the west. The floor of the Lambwe Valley slopes gently from an altitude of 1 280 m to 1 190 m at the shore of the Kavirondo Gulf. In its broad northern end it contains the Ruri hills. Lying close to the equator, the Valley tends to be hot and humid, but extreme temperatures and humidity are seldom experienced. The tropical woodlands and savannas harbour an enormous concentration of wildlife.
Drainage in the Lambwe Valley is largely subterranean and the Olambwe River, which meanders the whole length of the valley, carries water only seasonally. Deep gullied watercourses in the Gwasi and Gembe hills and on the escarpment carry storm torrents after heavy rain, but this water is rapidly absorbed and does not reach the Lambwe River. On the whole, the Lambwe Valley is a scenic natural landscapes marked by scenic lush vegetation and dramatic geological features.
