Masinga Dam: Riakanau Beach & Viewpoint

Straddling almost the entire southern border of Embu County, and separating it with Machakos County, the 120 km2 Masinga Dam is a salient, eye-catching feature. Naturally, being the largest man-made dam in Kenya, it has more than one scenic lookout point. The various vantages offer panoramic views of the dam and its surrounding landscape. Some of the viewpoints are at elevated positions, like hills and roadside observation decks, providing visitors with expansive vistas and opportunities for sightseeing, photography, and walking along Masinga Dam.

One of the great viewpoint of Masinga Dam is found at Riakanau 54 km south of Embu town via B6 Road. For the A1 Nairobi-Nanyuki-Morale Road motorist, Riakanau is 21 km from Makutano junction. Once off the A1 Road, you continue along the B6 Embu-Meru Road for 2 km then exit onto Karaba-Riakanau Road passing Embu University enroute. At Riakanau shopping centre you can get direction from the locals to the viewpoint. It offers unobstructed views of the Masinga, surrounding landscape, hills, valleys, forests and the rural skylines.
