Kindaruma Dam: First Of The Seven Forks
Unique to the Kindaruma Dam, east of Gitaru, is that it was the first dam to be commissioned, in 1968, as a part of the five all-important reservoirs built along the upper reaches of the Tana, more proper the Seven Forks Dam Project. It is fairly accessible via a good road passing the turnoff to Gitaru Dam, which is well signposted, yet surprisingly untravelled. Kindaruma’s average output is 44 MW.
From Kindaruma, the water is reinstated back into the Tana, onward to Kiambere Dam to the east. The area north and south of Kindaruma Dam is mostly covered by bushland, hosting a range of wildlife. The rugged hillsides overlooking a vast expanse of low valleys compose a lovely view with Kiang’ombe and Mumoni Hills seen at a distance. It is located 16 km from Kivaa along Embu-Kivaa-Kitui Road.
