Regions Museums in Elgeyo Marakwet

Biretwo Museum: Envisaged Cultural Asset

There are three major museums in Elgeyo Marakwet County – Biretwo, Sambirir and Tambach. Only the latter is operational, the former two, designated cultural museums, yet under construction. It is worth pointing out that the proposed Biretwo Museum, not far away south from the Kolol Viewpoint, has been work in progress for far too long, despite its real and perceived importance to this region.

Sadly so because the area is wildly beautiful. The view around Biretwo Museum is composed of Marakwet homes on the hillside, overlooking the vast Kerio Valley and steep escarpment. At an vantage elevation of 2,749 m, overlooking the valley, set at 1,252 m, the sights are serene, flanked by the humpy, wooded Chepkorio hills. Outsiders concerns on the project being in the pigeon hole for far too long has prompted the Elgeyo Marakwet Government to earmarked it for completion.

Construction of the Biretwo Museum and its cultural centre is expected to explicate interest of the region. On completion, Biretwo Museum aims in part to showpiece the rich history of long-distance running, synonymous with the region. Moreover, it expected to income pipelines for the predominantly agrarian locals, who will benefit from travellers through sale of artefacts and souvenirs.

If approaching from Iten, via C51 Road to Kabarnet, Biretwo Museum is situated 11 km south of Kolol Viewpoint near Kapsomin Centre. Contrariwise, if approaching from Karbanet, it is located at the junction of Kabarnet escarpment and Biretwo.

The regional museums in Kenya offer a fascinating journey through the country’s history and heritage. They look back at ancient civilizations, cultures as they were centuries ago, cottage industries, colonial legacies, and archaeological finding – in specialization or as a combination – to give insights on the past and present.
